About Brake Pad/Shoe friction codes:
- All U.S. street legal brake pads/shoes have a two-letter designation for frictional coefficient (performance) stamped on the backing plate or the pad/shoe edge
- The first letter signifies the low-temperature friction performance (200 to 400 degrees F)
- The second letter signifies the high-temperature friction performance (300 to 650 degrees F)
- The higher the letter in the alphabet, the higher the frictional coefficient (grabbier, better performance)
- Normal brake pad code letters range from C through G
- If the first letter is lower than the second letter, it indicates the pad performs better at high temperatures and needs to be warmed-up
- If the second letter is lower than the first letter, it indicates the pad may fade at higher temperatures
- The best all around street pads have good friction at both high and low temperatures (codes "FF" and "GG")
